Maranda Boys High School, which was ranked tops in the country in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination results released on Wednesday, upsetting traditional big schools, is the alma mater of some well-known Kenyans.
Leading the pack is Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who left the school in 1962.
The no-nonsense judge Justice Nicholas Ombija was also a student there.
Then there is the towering Internal Security assistant minister Orwa Ojodeh alias ‘Sirkal’, whose colleagues jokingly refer to as ‘the only assistant minister who is also a minister’ because of his preeminent role in handling the ministry’s affairs in Parliament.
Others are the renowned preacher PC Peter Raburu and law scholar and former Law Society of Kenya chairman Otiende Amollo.
Nearly half the teachers at the school, who include eight heads of departments, are also old boys, according to a list provided by Maranda High School Alumni Association.
Interestingly, the school only has humble resources with a severe water shortage being the biggest problem. With no piped water, students fetch the precious commodity from a not-so-near pond.
Sometimes conflicts between the students and villagers watering their cattle in the pond arise as the animals muddy the waters and eat students’ uniform.

The school, which sits on the edge of Lake Victoria, also has weather that is very hostile to learning and classes are scheduled for very odd hours — early morning and late evening due to heat.
Students are taught up to mid-day before they disperse into tree shades, where they discuss in small groups.
