Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday delivered a special message from President Kibaki to President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan urging dialogue to resolve the simmering tensions between Juba and Khartoum.
He told President al-Bashir that Kenya, as the custodian of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, supported a peaceful approach to address suspicions that could lead to hostilities between the two countries.
Mr Musyoka was optimistic that next month’s meeting between President al-Bashir and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir in Juba would resolve the issues that threaten to derail peace between the two states, which until last July were one country. (READ: Kiir accuses Khartoum of looking for war)
On the decision by the Kenyan court to arrest President al-Bashir should he set his foot on Kenyan soil, Mr Musyoka expressed government’s displeasure with the ruling.
“The Attorney-General has already appealed against the ruling and we are confident that the court will reverse it,” he said, adding that it was not the intention of the government to arrest and hand over a sitting President to the ICC.
President al-Bashir assured Mr Musyoka that he was committed to a peaceful resolution of outstanding issues between Khartoum and Juba and that he would honour President Kiir’s invitation to visit Juba next month.
Earlier, Mr Musyoka held talks with chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee Mohammed Elamien and the chairman of the Legislative Affairs committee of the Sudan Parliament, Mr Alfadir Haj Suleiman, who visited him at his hotel room.
The VP also met Kenyans working and studying in Sudan and briefed them on preparations for the next General Election.
