Kenya to feature at Lake of Stars fest

Aug 5, 2011 – Kenyan singer/songwriter Dan ‘Chizi’ will be the first ever Kenyan act to take part in the Lake of Stars Festival, Malawi’s annual international arts festival.
He will be part of 70 acts including the best of Malawian music and South African awards winning band Freshlyground.
Dan Chizi will represent the strengthening link between Kenya and Malawi, and showcase his talent in jazzy afro-fusion music.
Also embodying Kenyan talent will be Wanuri Kahiu’s production and Kenya’s first sci-fi flick Pumzi.
Organisers said in a statement that this year’s cultural celebration will take place from September 30 to October 2, on the palm fringed shores of Lake Malawi.
Acts from Namibia, France and the United States will also rock the show. Here’s the full listhttp://www.lakeofstars.org/lineup.htm
Festival founder Will Jameson is enthusiastic.
“It’s hard to imagine a better festival than last year- our biggest and best to date. But this year we’re going to be taking our best ever line up of talent, featuring African legends, new international acts and the best of Malawian talent, as well as theatre, spoken word and dance.”
“We’ve also got Freshlyground performing their first ever public Malawian gig.  They’ve been on Lake of Stars radar for a number of years, so we’re proud to provide a platform for their first ever public performance in Malawi.  Plus we’re privileged to be welcoming back Black Missionaries, living legends of the Malawian music scene who have rocked Lake of Stars whenever they have played”.
Jameson continued: “The festival was borne from a desire to raise money for a developing economy, promote Malawi as a top travel destination and expose Malawian artists to international crowds.”
Last year, the festival generated about Sh92 million from ticket sales and the service industry.
Jazz maestro Oliver Mtukudzi has said of the event: “I wish there were more festivals like this.”
