A majority of Kenyans want Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto to vie for the presidency despite being indicted by the ICC, an opinion poll shows.
Synovate conducted the survey between January 27 and February 1, but did not release the results immediately as the High Court had stopped debate on the candidature of the two.
It showed that 48 per cent of 1,523 people interviewed supported Mr Kenyatta’s candidature.
Asked if Mr Ruto should vie for the presidency despite indictment by the ICC, 47 per cent of the respondents answered in the affirmative.
Central and Rift Valley led in number of people who want Mr Ruto and Mr Kenyatta’s name to be on ballot paper.
Asked whom they would prefer to lead Kenya if Mr Ruto and Mr Kenyatta do not vie, 34 per cent of respondents chose Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Mr Musyoka (22), Ms Karua (7), Mr Wamalwa (4), Prof Saitoti (4), Mr Mudavadi and Mr Kenneth two each and Mr Raphael Tuju (1).
Three per cent of respondents said they would not vote if the names of the two ICC suspects are not on the ballot.
The poll, however, showed Mr Odinga would still win the presidency if elections were held today. The PM would also win in a run-off.
Mr Odinga would beat his closest rival, Mr Kenyatta, in a run-off by two percentage points.
The poll revealed a shift in voting as one conducted last October by the same firm showed that Mr Kenyatta would have beaten Mr Odinga by three percentage points in a run-off if the elections were held then.
