Two suspected Somali pirates were on Saturday flown to Mombasa following their arrest by Danish naval forces in the high seas.
It was not immediately established whether the suspects were flown directly from the sea to Mombasa or if they were first taken to another country.
The suspects arrived at the Moi International Airport at 9.30 am and were locked up at the Mombasa Port Police Station.
Port OCPD Agnes Lihabi confirmed that the suspects had been arrested by Danish naval officers after allegedly attacking a fishing vessel.
“We have sketchy information. The case is under investigation and we expect the suspects to be taken to court on Monday,” said Ms Lihabi, adding that the suspects allegedly committed the offence on January 7 this year.
The suspects were accompanied to the port police station by officers from the provincial CID offices at the Coast and two State counsel.
The suspected pirates appeared to be in their early 20s and seemed calm.
Two other suspected pirates were expected to be brought into Mombasa by Sunday evening.
Sources privy to the investigations indicated that the suspects had allegedly taken hostage the crew of a fishing vessel for almost 40 days before they were arrested by Danish naval forces.
Kenya is among the few African countries that have agreed to try suspected Somali pirates arrested by international forces. (READ:Kenya’s neighbours reluctant to host courts)
However, some cases have stalled following an appeal by the State challenging a High Court ruling that had declared the country has no jurisdiction to try suspected Somali pirates arrested outside its territorial waters.
