HISTORY REPEATING: Could history be repeating itself? poses Nickson Orwa, in response to the growing competition for the ODM presidential nomination between party leader Raila Odinga and his deputy Musalia Mudavadi.
In the 1990s, Orwa recalls, Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and Kenneth Matiba badly fell out over the mode of nomination, with the former preferring the collegiate system, while the latter was for direct nomination, hence his mantra: “Let the people decide.”
The result was the disastrous split of FORD and Kanu won the poll, he concludes.

FUN BEING SPOILT: The superb new Globe Cinema overpass built by a Chinese company has finally been opened to motorists and it’s really a joy to drive on, remarks a delighted JM.
However, he moans, the fun is being spoilt by the proliferation of the notorious 14-seater matatus at the old Nation House roundabout on Tom Mboya Street.
“These unruly drivers cause a traffic jam tailback covering the entire section and which causes more confusion in an area where vehicles should be moving through smoothly.”

ENDEMIC POVERTY: The sight of President Kibaki shedding tears at an Equity Bank Student sponsorship launch ceremony at Kasarani Sports Complex, Nairobi, was quite telling, as it clearly confirmed one thing: The government’s failure to fight poverty, notes Maina Gathu.
He adds: “If he could watch wananchi in their daily struggles to make ends meet, his eyes would be perpetually full of tears.”
According to Maina, the best examples of how endemic poverty is ravaging Kenyans include the deadly siphoning of fuel following oil tanker accidents.

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: The President of Kenya, Rufus Eshuchi notes, earns Sh2 million a month.
The total for his entire five-year term is a cool Sh120 million.
But Rufus has been alarmed lately to hear that one needs between Sh5 billion and Sh10 billion to mount a successful presidential campaign.
At that rate, he wonders how the successful candidate is expected to recoup the investment.
“What would make somebody invest billions of shillings in the campaign only to end up earning Sh120 million during his entire tenure?” he asks.

NOISY CULPRITS: Nema is not engaging in any publicity stunts in its crackdown on noisy bars at Mtwapa, especially on the Mombasa-Malindi highway, as alleged by local resident Jitu Haria, says acting principal communications officer Morton Saulo.
The environmental agency, he adds, has already filed cases against three bar owners, which should come up for hearing some time next week.
Expressing his gratitude to Jitu for “the vital information”, Morton wishes to assure all that Nema has stepped up surveillance to net all the noisy culprits.

CONCERNED BENEFACTOR: Moved by the Nation story on the plight of Joyce Wangare, the 16-year-old girl, who passed her KCPE exam quite well in 2010, but didn’t join high school because her parents couldn’t raise the fees, and now crushes stones in ballast to eke out a living, Julius Richard Onyango, wants to help out.

“I wish to contribute a little money to enable her to go back to school. I would like to start the kitty with Sh5,000 and hope that others will chip in to enable this girl to realise her dream,” says Julius, who can be reached through rjulius24@hotmail.com.

NO ROAD SIGNS: The lack of road signs at Westlands shopping centre, Nairobi, is a big headache for motorists, as it is a major cause of the chaotic traffic flow in the busy suburb, moans Paresh Patel.
“Everyone thinks he/she has the right of way and will not stop at crossroads, especially on Muthithi and General Mathenge roads.
"If it is the case that all the metal signposts have been stolen, why not paint the signs on the roads to create some semblance of order?
"At the moment, the largest and fastest vehicles seem to have the right of way.”
Have an orderly day, won’t you!
