NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 26 – Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta is due to make his first public appearance on Friday after his indictment by the International Criminal Court (ICC), at a major public rally in Eldoret alongside area Member of Parliament William Ruto.
The two are expected to address a peace rally at the 64 Stadium in Eldoret followed by another one in Ruiru on Saturday.
“We are hitting Eldoret on Friday for the mother of all political rallies with UK and Bil… Saturday we do Ruiru. Thursday next week; Meru and rest of the country later as we hit the ballot box,” a text message forwarded to MPs expected to attend the rallies read.
Friday’s rally in Eldoret will be the first time Kenyatta will be seen in public since ICC judges named him alongside Ruto, Francis Muthaura and Joshua arap Sang for their alleged role in planning the post election violence of 2008.
It also comes a day after the Gatundu South MP stepped aside as the Finance Minister from President Kibaki’s administration. He however remains Deputy Prime Minister under the national accord.
The duo, and especially Ruto, has in the past been critical of Prime Minister Raila Odinga whom they have accused of using them as sacrificial lambs for political reasons.
Ruto supporters have always maintained that their man was carrying Odinga’s cross and warned that a time of reckoning was coming when everyone would account for their role in the post election violence.
They have since maintained their innocence and exuded confidence that the International Criminal Court judges will clear them of any wrong doing.
Kenyatta is accused five counts of crimes against humanity that include murder, rape, and other sexual offences, transfer of populations and persecution.
Ruto faces three counts of crimes against humanity.
