Finnish deaf rap artiste Signmark on Friday wowed fans with his unique singing talent. Signmark, the only deaf rap artiste in the world, was performing at the Nakumatt Lifestyle Lounge in Nairobi. In an exclusive interview with Word Is, the 21-year-old revealed that he started his music career ten years ago by studying beats from the computer and matching them with posted lyrics in the internet. “I translated Michael Jackson's Bonjovi when I was 11. I read his lyrics and followed the rhythm from beats.I could even dance to his Moonwalk hit at that time,” he said.
Inspired by Coolio and DMC, Signmark said he is using his music to spread the message to people discouraging them from stigmatising the disabled. “I hope the governments have realised that the number of disabled people is really growing and they are establishing organisations to accommodate them,” added Signmark who travelled to Uganda on a similar campaign.
Signmark said he has previously been approached by big artistes to record with him but he didn't agree with their terms. "They were being selfish and only wanted to sign me to increase their popularity, so I refused." Famed for songs like Deafmans Blues and Smells Like Victory, Signmark's visit was courtesy of the Embassy of Finland together with Signs Media Kenya.
