A dozen teenagers under the umbrella of Teens for Peace visited magnificent sites in Rusinga Island last week to celebrate an eventful 2011. The teens, who hosted the Tom Mboya Memorial Marathon in Rusinga in November, raised Sh1.2 million in September for the Kenyans for Kenya initiative. The retreat was preceded by community activity at Rusinga Technical Institute. The teens with the assistance of Put Sarajevo under the watchful eye of Engineer Safet, Engineer Odera and painter Jakokoth spent Sh1 million in preparing the institution in readiness for admission of its first batch of students this month.
The teenagers were led by the CEO of Teens for Peace, 14-year-old Amy Lorna Onyonyi. Amy is a student at Roselyn Academy in Nairobi and the youngest ever recipient of presidential honour, having been bestowed Head of State Commendation(HSC) five years ago when she was nine. A music lover and one of the best soloists among her agemates in Kenya today, Amy plays guitar, violin and piano. She was the entertainer in chief during the retreat.
The youngsters visited the Tom Mboya Mausoleum and the tiny half-acre twin islands on Waware and Wanyama. They also had an opportunity to go fishing at the omena city in the dead of the night using traditional canoes. Throughout their stay in Rusinga, the teens who come from different parts of Kenya had an opportunity to sample a variety of traditional lakeside dishes prepared by their hosts Mr and Mrs Solomon Oburu Obara.
