State to clear Migingo police officers' rent arrears

By Nicholas Anyuor
A team of Housing ministry officials will be sent to Migingo island to help resolve the dispute over rent arrears for police officers.
The Government has promised to clear the arrears immediately following reports that Kenyan officers were evicted from their houses over outstanding rent amounting to Sh500,000.
The landlord threw the officers out last week, claiming the debt was crippling his business.
Nyanza PC Francis Mutie said the Government was looking for funds to clear the arrears and appealed to the landlord to remain patient.
He said the Government’s efforts to put up tents on the island for the officers had failed due to lack of space.
The PC said the Housing ministry officials will visit the island soon to do analysis and evaluations before the arrears are cleared.
Mutie, however, dismissed reports that the officers had not been paid their allowances. He said police in the Migingo operation were on ‘normal operations’ and were earning their normal salaries.
Forced
"This is normal work. We don’t see why the officers have to be paid allowances. They are in their stations. But we shall see into that, though for now rent is the main issue," he said.
Mutie appealed to the officers on the island to remain disciplined and always give factual information.
"Don’t bring politics to this. We are appealing to the officers here to remain disciplined and stop leaking information that is not factual," he said.
Internal Security Assistant Minister Orwa Ojode asked for calm and said the Government was addressing the matter.
