Eldoret North MP William Ruto will be campaigning on a platform of upholding family values. The United Republican Party which is Ruto's party of choice for the presidential race, stands against abortion and same sex marriages.
The party considers marriage to be only that between a man and a woman and will propagate the sancity of life which they say begins at conception. Its policies will be guided by religious teachings and African customs. “We respect the family as the basic unit of a nation. We subscribe to the family values based on the African principles, especially marriage between a man and woman and the sanctity of life from conception,” Turkana Central MP Ekwe Ethuro said in a statement read on behalf of the 25 MPs including Ruto, Cabinet minister Chirau Mwakwere who attended the URP meeting.
Other 'republican' values the party subscribes to are the principles of self discipline and reliance which encourage the people's participation in the exercise of powes of state and in decision making; patriotism and a lean government devoid of bureaucracy and wastage. The URP is set to be launched on Sunday at the Bomas of Kenya and will also release a programme of meetings and rallies to popularise its values. Dujis MP Aden Duale said URP will simultaneously launch the recruitment exercise on Sunday which will be completed by February 15 of February before holding national polls.
Ethuro cited the 'difficulties' that Ruto and his allies had faced in UDM as the reason for the formation of the new party. “It became apparent that the party was being infiltrated by many external forces that were out to cripple it by all means. The forces were ready to use legal processes such as courts and tribunals to keep this honourable team languishing in the deserts and miss the straight path to Canaan,” Ethuro explained.
He said the challenges were 'a blessing in disguise as God had intended us to form a vibrant and people centred party." Chepalungu MP Issac Rutto said the new party will immediately start lobbying Parliament to speed up the enactment of Bills for the full implementation of the new constitution. He specifically cited the Bills on devolution as a priority. Medical services assistant minister Kazungu Kambi likened the formation of the new party as the " white smoke that the college of cardinal sends to signify the election of a new Pope."
