An ODM official attacked a councillor during a funeral, a week after a minister banned politicians from speaking in such gatherings.
Mr Zachary Muga, a middle-aged ODM sub-branch chairman in Kasipul Kabondo constituency confronted 76-year-old councillor Owidi Atoka for allegedly criticising his leadership and joining the camp of area MP Oyugi Magwanga during the burial of Gilbert Omondi Oywer over the weekend.
Mr Muga grabbed the civic leader and tore his shirt before hitting him a walking stick. Mourners ran away wailing and the incident temporarily stopped the funeral.
Local ODM officials led by lawyer Samuel Ochilo, described the incident as archaic and retrogressive and called on the party office to convene an urgent meeting to suspend the chairman.
“This is the kind of impunity we can’t allow to thrive in our party, ” he said.
Rachuonyo OCPD Mrs Naomi Ichami confirmed the incident saying investigations were under way and the party official will be arrested.
The incident comes shortly after other politicians fought during the burial of former Oyugis Mayor Ogweno Ong’ondo.
Internal Security assistant minister has banned politicians from speaking in funerals.
