All public hospitals will be refurbished and equipped with modern facilities starting next month if proposed plans are approved by the Cabinet. Acting Medical Services minister Dalmas Otieno yesterday said they had worked out a roadmap that will restructure the health infrastructure and that the plan is awaiting Cabinet's approval.  “By the end of this year, a number of outstanding issues like the dilapidated infrastructure, lack of equipments and staffing will be addressed. We are waiting for the Minister of Medical Services who is expected back in the country by next week to present the proposals to Cabinet,” Otieno said.
He said contained in the proposal, the government will consider renting some of the specialised equipment needed in hospitals to avoid loses in case the equipment becomes obsolete. On staffing, remuneration, retention and other terms of service for doctors, the minister said already, the doctors union and other stakeholders were in negotiations. “This is to ensure that the doctors are motivated so as they dispense their services fully. This is a move towards universal healthcare provisions that we all yearn for,” Otieno said.
