Three people including officers working for retired President Moi were injured in an accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The accident involving Moi's motorcade occurred at Karai. ACK Bishop Thomas Kogo from Eldoret was caught up in the melee but escaped unhurt. Moi, who was in the convoy, was heading to Nairobi.
A witness, Samuel Njoroge, said some cars had stopped by the roadside to give way to Moi’s motorcade when a speeding vehicle tried to get off the road but hit the bishop’s car. “The driver lost control of the car and hit Moi’s motorcade causing the Bishop's car to ram into the rear of a car in front of it,” he said. Naivasha OCPD Ernest Oponyo said three people sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged.
