A planned demolition of houses and repossession of illegally acquired land in Athi River took a new turn on Saturday when three ministers and a group of MPs held a rally in the area to block attempts to carry out the exercise.
Water and Irrigation minister Charity Ngilu, assistant ministers Wavinya Ndeti and Ferdinand Waititu led the leaders in forming a movement to help champion land issues in the region.
MPs Kiema Kilonzo (Mutito), Mike Mbuvi ‘Sonko’ (Makadara), The Independent Party leader Kalembe Ndile and former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga joined in backing the declaration by urging Kenyans to resist any attempts by the State and its agents to evict them.
During the meeting held at the Nairobi-Namanga road junction and which was attended by hundreds of people, Mrs Ngilu said the demolitions were rendering Kenyans homeless.
“I salute leaders who have in the recent past shown braveness in championing the cause of ordinary Kenyans and in this category I feel proud to mention Wavinya Ndeti, Ferdinand Waititu and Mike Sonko,” Mrs Ngilu said.
Elsewhere, residents of Mitumba and Maasai villages spent the night in the cold after demolition machines knocked down their houses on Saturday.
The demolitions in Mitumba slums were, however, met with resistance as residents engaged police in running battles.
