Three presidential aspirants allied to President Kibaki will next week launch the political party they hope to use to win this year’s general elections.
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper Democratic Movement, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta of Kanu and Internal Security minister George Saitoti of PNU will officially launch the PNU Alliance at Uhuru Park on Tuesday.
They are expected to announce the individual recruitment of members for their parties before coming together for joint nominations.
Prior to the launch, the three are this Thursday expected to lead a funds raiser for the alliance.
Joint nomination rules
Kanu’s national executive council will meet on Thursday to kick off its recruitment drive.
The alliance’s national executive council meeting held two weeks ago allowed affiliate parties to strengthen their parties to comply with the requirements of the Political Parties Act.
They also agreed that such activities would run alongside those of the alliance.
The alliance’s elections are scheduled for next month and the three aspirants have approved joint nomination rules that would lead to two of them being knocked out of the presidential race.
According to Kangundo MP Johnstone Muthama, who is the alliance’s meetings convenor, grassroots polls will start at the polling centre level on February 17 followed by ward elections the following day.
The date for national elections is yet to be set.
