Two security guards appeared at a Makadara court yesterday charged with the theft of Sh50,000 goods during the festive season. Patrick Ondonyo, 43, and Patrick Sandaki, 42, were alleged to have stolen the goods from a Catholic Centre. The two remained in custody since their arrest on New Year's day.
They were unable to raise a cash bail of Sh30,000 each which was later reduced to Sh20,000. They were charged with stealing the property of National Catholic Youth Centre on divers dates between December 24 and January 1. The goods they are alleged to have stolen were mattresses, 11 bed sheets, foodstuff and seven blankets. The goods belonged to Mji wa Furaha in Kasarani constituency. The court gave a hearing date for Odonyo as he denied the allegations.
However, Sandaki admitted having committed the offence. The two faced an alternative charge of handling the stolen goods. According to the prosecution the goods were found at Mathare estate where both resided. An official at the centre had travelled up country during the festive season but on her return found the goods missing.
She said she found one of the accused guards in the store room on January 1 going through the items and realised many were missing. She said when questioned the guard was unable to explain where the goods were. The official reported the matter to police at Kasarani station. It was claimed that after a search the goods were found to have been shared out among the guards. Resident Magistrate W. Ngumi fixed the case for hearing on March 26.
