G7 PLOTS TO DEFEAT PM RAILA WITHIN ODM

MEMBERS of the G7 Alliance are quietly scheming to have Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi defeat his boss Prime Minister Raila Odinga when ODM chooses its presidential candidate later this year. Mudavadi came second to Raila in the 2007 party presidential nominations while ODM Deputy Party leader William Ruto was a distant third. Some of the delegates in today's ODM meeting in Nairobi are privy to the G7 scheme.
Raila has summoned ODM officials across Kenya today to discuss strategy as he prepares to contest the Presidency for the third time. The plan, according to multiple leaders with the G7 Alliance, is to convince ODM delegates from Rift Valley, Central and Western to all vote for Mudavadi instead of Raila. "We think that if we can get ODM to nominate Mudavadi then our work will be done. If Mudavadi gets the ticket, than we will vigorously campaign for him because Raila will not have a chance," said a senior G7 leader.
The G7 Alliance brings together Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto and Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa. The Alliance has however been shaken by the insistence of Uhuru's party KANU that it will go it alone in the elections. Rebel ODM MPs from Rift Valley have previously said that if ODM nominates Musalia that they will stay in the party. "You know that Raila is the front runner in this contest. From the look of things this thing called PNU Alliance is not likely to happen so we are looking for alternative ways of ensuring something else other than Raila succeeds President Kibaki later this year," said a PNU cabinet minister yesterday.
Mudavadi has been holding meetings with ODM delegates especially from western Kenya where he has insisted that he will challenge Raila for the presidential ticket. According to insiders, the Mudavadi camp believes it can triumph over Raila should the party endorse nomination exercise through primary elections by secret ballot of registered ODM members at constituency level. The Mudavadi supporters believe that a vote by acclamation at a National Delegates Conference can be manipulated.
Yesterday ODM Secretary-General Anyang Nyong'o and executive director Janet Ongera announced at a press conference that the meeting will "devise a winning formula for this year’s general election". The meeting at KCB Karen Leadership Centre in Nairobi will be attended by ODM MPs, all chairmen from the 47 counties and the National Executive Council. Branch chairpersons will be accompanied by their secretaries, women representatives and youth leaders, Nyong'o added. Top of the agenda will be the mode of selection of the ODM flag bearers in the party elections later this year and Raila’s allies are keen to stop ‘the plot’.
The plot, according to insiders, involves having ODM select the presidential candidates through a primary nomination exercise conducted by the IEBC. In this way, Raila's enemies can team up to deny the PM the numbers in Rift Valley, Western, Central, Eastern and part of Coast and Kisii regions.
Last month, Mudavadi held meetings with ODM delegates in the entire western Kenya. This weekend, he moves to the Coast on a similar mission and is due to visit Kisii by end month. He will be in Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta Counties as from Friday to Monday; where he concentrates on town hall meetings with the delegates instead of rallies. “All candidates including Raila and Mudavadi should be subjected to a democratic process and whoever wins will be supported by all,” said Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka, an ally of Raila. He cautioned against assuming that Raila has already secured the ticket remembering how Barrack Obama unexpectedly beat Hilary Clinton in 2008.
