FOUR suspected robbers were yesterday morning shot dead in Westlands just a few metres from the home of government spokesman Dr Alfred Mutua. A plain-clothe police officer involved in the operation was shot and injured in the head by the thugs and was rushed to MP Shah Hospital in Parklands.
According to an eyewitness, the slain suspects were confronted by a group of detectives driving from the opposite direction of Grevillea Grove at about 9.40am. Government spokesman Dr Alfred Mutua said the shooting was coincidental to have occurred near his home. “I am told the police had been chasing the thugs the whole night and it just happened that their car ran out of fuel near the place,” Mutua said. Mutua said such incident can occur outside anyone's home and denied that the thugs might have been targeting his house. The suspects were walking near Gre Villas and Elite Garden Villas when police ambushed them.
Police claimed they were six members of a gang and had been dropped in the neighbourhood to commit crime in several residential houses. “I just heard loud gun shots near our gate and on rushing out, I found a crowd milling around four dead bodies,” Catherine Wanyaga, a resident in one of the houses, said. Officers from the Special Crime Prevention Unit are said to have trailed the suspects for several hours before cornering them at the dead end of Grevillea Groove.
Gigiri OCPD Patrick Mwakio and head of SCPU John Koki visited the scene and later went to the hospital to check on the injured officer. Police said two of the suspects managed to escape by jumping a wall to one of the houses. Two home-made pistols and a knife were recovered while police said they were looking for the two suspects as well as one more gun that the escapees went away with. Identities of those killed had not been done formally but at least one of them had his national identification card with the names Charles Tabu from Busia district.
