CITY Mayor George Aladwa has won the battle for leadership of the ODM Nairobi branch against his rival Bishop Margaret Wanjiru. Aladwa is among the party chiefs who have been summoned to a meeting with Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his capacity as Nairobi county chairman.
The mayor received a text from the party's executive director Janet Ongera inviting him to the Thursday meeting at KCB Karen leadership centre. “Hon ODM branch chairman, you are invited together with your secretary, women leader and youth leader to leaders' meeting in Nairobi to be graced by party leader on Thursday. The venue shall be communicated later,” an SMS sent to Aladwa read in part. “Only four officials from each county will attend the Forum whose aim is to put strategies in place for the party ahead of the National Delegates Congress and the General Election,”a statement by Ongera said.
Sources at ODM yesterday intimated to the Star that the party now recognises Aladwa as the elected party boss in the city due to his massive grassroots support. The source said that Wanjiru who contests the mayor's election will be prevailed upon to go for a national seat once the party calls for its national polls later in February. “We don’t want to loose either of the officials and now Aladwa will remain party chairman, while Wanjiru will be supported to win a position in the national office,” the source added.
