NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 9 – Four suspected gangsters were shot dead and a policeman wounded in a shootout on Monday morning in the upmarket Kyuna estate in Nairobi.
Police and witnesses said the four were in the company of two others who were planning a robbery at a residential house in the area when they were confronted by Flying Squad officers at about 10am.
“We just heard a loud blast and when I looked around I saw men brandishing guns and they were shooting at one another. I dashed for safety but seconds later I saw four men lying down in a pool of blood,” a witness Catherine Wanyaga told Capital News at the scene.
Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU) Chief John Koki said the thugs were wanted in a series of armed robberies and murder in Nairobi and its environs but he did not make specific reference to any specific case.
“This is a dangerous group; they have engaged our officers in a shootout but we managed to gun down four of them,” Koki said. “But one of our officers had been wounded in the shooting.”
The wounded officer was being treated at the MP Shah hospital but officers who visited him said he was in a stable condition. He was shot in the head.
“He sustained head injuries but as we speak, he is doing quite fine. I have seen him in hospital,” Koki said.
Nairobi Provincial Police chief Anthony Kibuchi said they recovered two homemade guns, and two machetes from the slain thugs whose two accomplices escaped.
Interviews with police officers and witnesses at the scene revealed that the gangsters were riding in a saloon car which dropped them off and sped away.
“We suspect they wanted to strike in one of the residential houses here. They were dropped and it appears they were to be picked up after their mission. Another accomplice fled after shooting at our officer but we are confident we will get him,” the SCPU chief said.
Police have lately intensified patrols and surveillance to fight crime, particularly in Nairobi.
On Sunday night, another suspected gangster was shot dead in Uthiru in the outskirts of the capital, moments after he allegedly stole Sh1,000 and a mobile phone from a pedestrian.
Police said his accomplice was arrested and the stolen items recovered from him.
Elsewhere in Buruburu phase three, gangsters riding on motor cycles shot and wounded a supermarket attendant.
Police said nothing was stolen from the supermarket attendant.
Meanwhile, 12 men said to be members of a new criminal outfit known as Super Power were arrested in Eastleigh estate after weeks of terrorizing area residents.
“The men are in our custody and will be charged under the new law of Organised Gang Act. They are responsible for various criminal activities in the area,” Kibuchi said.
