STUDENTS at Starehe Boys’ Centre will now move away from using the chalk board to electronic smart interactive whiteboards. The boys' and girls' centres yesterday received three smart boards. The boys will retain two boards.
Starehe Boys’ Centre director Mathew Kithyaka said the United Kingdom Starehe Group donated the boards through Intersol-Kenya, a Canadian company . “The donation is a good gesture and a sign of love from our friends. We are ready to share this experience with many schools that keep on visiting us,” Kithyaka said.
The director said the schools will train all teachers on how to use the smart boards next year. Teachers will thereafter be required to impart the same knowledge to students, he said.
The boards are computerized and one can access the curricular from Intersol on especially sciences which have standard contents used for teaching. “Demonstration lessons would mainly be used in science subjects,” Kithyaka said.
The interactive board will definitely increase students’ concentration in class, he said. He added that ICT based teaching should be encouraged at all levels not only secondary schools.
Intersol-Kenya managing director, Angus Sawers said one board costs Sh250,000 including the price for the software content. “Once somebody buys the board the teaching content software can later be downloaded to as many computers as possible,” Sawer said adding there would be no red tape on copyright. The curricular will occasionally be reviewed, he said.
Way to go.
