FORMER champion Janeth Jepkosgei settled for a bronze medal for Kenya in the 800m final in the just concluded World championships games in Daegu.
Jepkosgei, better referred to as “Eldoret Express”, started the race forcefully leading from the start but faded at the end of the last lap to win another bronze medal for Kenya.
World Indoor and European Indoor champion Mariya Savinova of Russia won the race with a time of 1.55.98 seconds beating defending champion Caster Semenya of South Africa.
Jepkosgei clocked settled for a bronze medal she won at the last championship in Berlin after clocking 1.55.87.
It was a race that Jepkosgei was headed to win before Semenya, whom they run shoulder to shoulder with in the last lap, broke away to take the lead.
But the Russian, who has a very good kick when it comes to finishing a race, overtook both Jepkosgei and Semenya to run away with her first gold medal in the world championships.
Earlier on, Kenya’s dream of winning a medal in the 5,000m went up in smoke as USA’s Mohammed Farah won gold and was followed by compatriot Bernard Langat.
