SAFARICOM NAPPING. There is a big business opportunity in Nakuru County that Safaricom is losing out on, says Peter Kimani, on the lack of network in the densely-populated Wanyororo area of Subukia constituency.

The locals, he reports, cannot receive or make calls inside their houses. But even when they come out in search of the signal, they are not always lucky.

“Communicating with my old man in the village has become a nightmare, and yet he and others still hold onto their Safaricom numbers,” says Peter. His contact is Tel 0722484865.

SUGGESTION REPUGNANT. The call for the jamming of phones to prevent people using them in banking halls, libraries, prisons and classrooms is one Kanyi Gioko finds repugnant.

Phone etiquette, he adds, depends on how people have been socialised.

“The decision to make or not make a call in a banking hall depends on the individual. Since there is no critical security risk, jamming signals is uncalled for,” says Gioko, who is, however, surprised that nobody has ever thought of installing this device in prisons.

. . . AND DANGEROUS TOO. Also alarmed at Christopher Kibiwott’s call for the jamming of phone signals is Githio Njenga.

He says such a move would have devastating consequences, considering the vital services carried out using mobile phones.

“This would mean barring GSM signals, which will not only make people in those areas unable to make or receive calls, but also not to receive or send money. They will also not be able to access the Internet. Banks should just introduce special calling areas in their premises just like the smoking-zones in towns.”

PECULIAR GIGIRI. He has observed the area outside the UN offices at Gigiri and the US Embassy and Iqbal Kassam has noted something peculiar about the taxis operating there.

MUM'S A TERROR. Mumbi Mumbi wishes she could just lend her own mother for a day to the fellow who says he doesn’t understand why the people in the West name hurricanes, typhoons and other destructive natural forces after women.

“I am in my 40s and I can tell you that my mother has been terrorising my dad, my siblings and me and doesn’t give a damn. She is selfish, and ‘mean’ is her second name. To me, she is Hurricane Gathoni,” Mumbi concludes.
