Orange Democratic Movement rebel MPs have themselves to blame for the party’s decision to sack them from the Cabinet, Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi has said.
Mr Mudavadi said the rebel MPs had publicly declared their loyalty to another party. They have gone ahead to publicise and campaign for their new party of choice, he added.
“Some have even crowned themselves party leaders without elections and you wonder if that is not impunity and dictatorship in practice,” Mr Mudavadi said.
Addressing local leaders from Samburu County at Samburu Game Lodge, he said the politicians must be principled enough to leave the party if they do not agree with its policies.
Mr Mudavadi gave the example US’s Democratic Party where Mr Barack Obama and Mrs Hillary Clinton fought for party nomination but the latter remained in the party after losing.
“After the election, President Obama appointed her Secretary of State, but what will happen if she goes around to campaign for Ms Palin of the Republican Party without quitting and blaming Obama of dictatorship?” he asked.
At Wamba, Mr Mudavadi asked Kenyans to vet politicians based on policies and vision for the country and not listen to their false promises.
“Let us focus ahead on issues of development and economic empowerment of our people and tone down the political rhetoric,” he said.
At the same time, five MPs and two former MPs have endorsed Mr Mudavadi’s bid for the presidency on an ODM ticket.
The MPs are Mr Raphael Letimalo (Samburu East), Mr Justus Kizito (Shinyalu), Mr David Were (Matungu), Mr Yusuf Chanzu (Vihiga) and Ms Mary Mason Leshoomo (Nominated).
The former MPs are Mr Sammy Leshore and Mr Job Lalampaa.
They spoke on Saturday when they accompanied Mr Mudavadi on a tour of Samburu County.
