Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka takes his presidential campaign to Kisii this weekend where is scheduled to hold a leaders meeting upon arrival, address several rallies and preside over three fundraisers in an extensive three day tour. Organizers of Kalonzo’s visit have lined up several activities among them three harambee meetings in the two counties of Nyamira and Kisii.
The Mwingi North MP and ODM K leader seems to have picked the Seventh Day Adventist Church in his bid to stamp a footing in the Kisii politics and woo voters. The SDA church is the most dominant in the region and two of his Harambees will be held in institutions sponsored by the church.
Only last week (Sunday), Kalonzo was a chief guest at another fundraiser held at Karura SDA church in the city. Although, Karura is in the city, majority of its followers are from the Kisii community.
Lawyer and SDA church Member Dismiss Ndege says the VP’s deliberate move to identify with the church may end up bearing fruits for him in the region. “If he manages to convince the church, then that may resonate well with his presidential bid as adherents of the church may opt for him in Gusii,” Ndege said.
Kalonzo’s spokeman Kaplich Barsito confirmed the trip saying that the VP will arrive in Kisii on Sunday where he will be hosted by foreign affairs assistant minister Richard Onyonka in Kioge, Kitutu chache.
In the afternoon he will hold a leader’s meeting in Kisii town where all eleven MPs, councilors, religious leaders, and community, women and youth leaders have been invited to the meeting. On Monday, the VP will be at Nyambaria High school, sponsored by SDA church, to assist in raising funds for the expansion of the school.
On Tuesday, he will be at Eronge Adventist primary school in Borabu which is at the border point with Bomet County, also to raise funds to accommodate extra students that were displaced during the 2008 post election violence.
While criss crossing the two counties, Kalonzo will address roadside rallies at Kemera, Nyakoe, Keroka, Gesima, Nyansiongo, Tombe and major rally in Nyamira town.
