NAIROBI, Kenya July 10 - Three police officers who were arrested for attempting to carjack two trucks on Saturday have been dismissed from service.

Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi announced that the three officers would now face various charges-including attempted robbery with violence when they appeared in court on Monday.

"These are criminals, we have no place for them in the service," Mr Kibuchi told Capital News on telephone Sunday.

He said the officers would remain in custody until Monday when they were set to be arraigned in court.

"You will see them in court tomorrow [Monday] where they will appear just like any other criminal," he said.

One of the officers was attached to the Prime Minister's rural home in Bondo while another works at the PPO's office in Nairobi.

The third was attached to the Kabete police station under whose jurisdiction the attempted robbery occurred.

According to police, the officers in full uniform blocked two trucks in transit on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and forced their crew in a saloon car while armed with pistols.

The trucks' crew however, overpowered them and disarmed one of them whose pistol they threw out of the window before they abandoned their mission and fled.

The officers were in a saloon car which police later learnt had been hired earlier on Saturday morning.

When their mission was thwarted, the rogue officers drove the saloon car and abandoned it at the gate of the owner who had hired it to them and fled before they changed their mind mid way and went back to collect it since it had been damaged.

By that time, the owner had already reported the matter to the Kabete Police station and he was awaiting officers to visit the scene.

When the officers from Kabete police station responded, they did not found it there and immediately circulated its registration numbers.

The vehicle was traced to a garage in Grogan area of Kirinyaga road where mechanics were found fixing a broken window that was damaged during a commotion between the rogue policemen and the crews of the two trucks.

Two of the rogue policemen were arrested at the garage while the third was arrested at the Kamukunji police station where he had gone to report that he was mugged and his pistol stolen.

By that time, the truck drivers who had been attacked had reported the matter to officers at the Kabete police station and even led them to the scene on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway where the pistol was retrieved.

The officers are being held at the Kabete police station.
