| null ![]() 1/1 MP Mureithi (L) with Mr Mutua (R) OL KALOU, Kenya, Jun 12 - Ol Kalou Member of Parliament Erastus Mureithi has cautioned against neglecting the boy child in society at the expense of uplifting the welfare of the girl child. Mr Mureithi observed that a lot of focus and attention was being accorded the girl child thus leaving boys to cope with life's challenges by themselves which often ended up in contributing to their failure in life. Speaking in his constituency during celebrations to mark Milangine District Education and prize giving day, the MP noted the boy child faced numerous challenges in society among them temptation to engage in criminal activities such as drug abuse at the expense of his education. Area District Education Officer Alice Taiti had informed the meeting on the disparities in secondary school enrollment in the district which stood at 886 for boys and 1,312 for girls last year saying that if the situation was not checked, the boy child faced a grim future. The legislator said that his Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Committee was focused on improving education standards in the area adding that it had supplemented the government bursary scheme of Sh100 million in the constituency with an extra Sh200 million in order to assist needy students especially in day schools access quality education. He added that plans were underway to set up a computer center in the area in order to expand Information Communication Technology (ICT) services. Information Secretary Ezekiel Mutua who was the chief guest challenged education providers to embrace ICT in order for them to impart the same to their pupils and students as a way of fast tracking the realisation of the country's blue print development goals of Vision 2030. "ICT has to be entrenched in every cycle of our lives for efficiency and also as a way of cutting down on our day to day operational costs in all spheres of our economy," the Information Secretary advised. Mr Mutua also challenged parents and guardians of children to prioritise education of the young ones saying that the new Constitution of Kenya was very clear on the rights of the child. He particularly singled out Chapter Four of the Constitution where the Bill of Rights, Article 53 (b) guarantees free and compulsory basic education to all children in the country. He said any parent who fails to educate their children would be going against the Constitution thus breaking the law. The Information Secretary observed that by educating children, the entire society stood to benefit giving examples of prominent personalities who hail from the area among them Internal Security Permanent Secretary Francis Kimemia. Quoting excerpts of an inspirational speech given by American President Barrack Obama, Mr Mutua told the students and pupils present that their lives' destiny was held in their hands. "Everyone has something you can do to yourself to enable other efforts by the government and parents to come to fruition," he quoted a section of President Obama's speech. Prominent businessman and proprietor of Nairobi projector Services George Macharia called on all stakeholders to join hands in uplifting education standards in the area. |
