Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi on Saturday hosted Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s tour of Meru North region, but of the region’s nine MPs, only two showed up – Higher Education assistant minister Kilemi Mwiria and Mr Linturi.

The PM’s tour rekindled the deep-seated rivalry between the region’s MPs with Mr Linturi lashing out at the legislators who skipped the meeting, saying area residents would not support any MP who was not there.
He said he had extended invitations to his colleagues but most of them said they would skip the tour.
“They said that by bringing Raila around, I would be writing my political obituary.
“I feel so sad that they were not happy that Igembe South stood to benefit from title deeds and the commissioning of the road,” he told the meeting.
Mr Mwiria said the region was open to hosting all presidential aspirants, saying no one should expect to automatically get the Meru vote.
“We will not bar anybody from touring this region and asking for votes. We will, however, look at their record on the fight for democracy and restoration of human rights.
“We will also look at how they have helped and love the Meru people,” said Dr Mwiria.
On his part, the PM urged residents to steer clear of tribal alliances being spearheaded by some of the area’s politicians.
Mr Odinga said the region risked being isolated by other communities if it detached itself from the rest of the country.
Speaking at Maua municipal stadium where he issued 3,000 title deeds to area residents, the PM said the country had made great strides in development and could not risk being dragged back to the days of tribal alliances.
“We want to unite Kenya. The days when tribal chiefs thrived by creating a wedge among the people are long gone,” he said.
