The national NGO council has asked Parliament to ensure that funds for next year’s General Election are factored in this year’s budget.
Council chairman Ken Wafula said failure to budget for next year’s polls would create a constitutional crisis.
“By failing to consider the election budget this year, the current leaders may have to stay in power for another year and there may be a constitutional crisis,” Mr Wafula said on Tuesday.
Since the elections are to take place in August 2012, he said, Parliament should be dissolved three months to the polls, and there will be no time to read another budget.
Mr Wafula said the budget should be discussed in Parliament as the Constitution stipulates.
“We understand that the leaders are worried about losing their jobs earlier than planned,” he said.
“However, that is not reason enough to try to break the law Kenyans voted for overwhelmingly.”
At the same time, Mr Wafula backed the nomination of Dr Willy Mutunga, Ms Nancy Baraza and Mr Keriako Tobiko to the posts of Chief Justice, deputy CJ and Director of Public Prosecutions respectively.
