NAIROBI, Kenya June 26 - Police have been unable to trace the owner of a sleek Mercedes Benz which was seen dropping off the body of a University of Nairobi Masters student whose death is now shrouded in mystery.

Guards on Waiyaki Way told police they saw the Mercedez Benz dropping off the girl’s body on Waiyaki Way on the night of June 17.

Sleuths investigating the case said they obtained the registration numbers of the black Benz but have not been able to contact the owner because the address available at the Kenya Revenue Authority which maintains records of motor vehicle ownership are not up to date.

“The name is given plus the address but we cannot reach the person because it appears the address is no longer in use,” a police officer said.

The officers are investigating the death of Mercy Chepkosgei Keino, who was pursuing masters degree programme at the University of Nairobi.

She had attended a party at an apartment Complex on Church Road alongside some of her friends when she was reportedly ejected after differing with an MP, according to witnesses who have recorded statements with the police.

Police are interested to know the registered owner of the Mercedes Benz said to have been seen dropping off her body on the highway.

Police said they were analysing statements indicating that the woman was escorted out of the party by the MP’s bodyguards who are reported to have left her at the gate of the apartment.

The bodyguards have also recorded statements with the police.

Police said they were interested to know the movements of the deceased woman from the time the bodyguards abandoned her at the gate, because her body was discovered a few kilometers away.

“We are piecing together information that is available as we try to gather that which is not available. Anyone with information that can help is welcome to assist us,” Gigiri OCPD Joseck Nasio said.

Nansio said, initially the matter was booked in as a hit-and-run accident but after several pieces of information emerged, “it became necessary to carry out detailed investigations.”

“We are speaking to people who were at the party, those who saw the body being dropped off and the people who are said to have escorted her out of the party,” he said.

Among those who have recorded statements with the police include Mr Kabogo, his bodyguards and some of the people who were at the party.

“We are not saying any of those who recorded statements are liable for the death. We are just carrying out a normal procedure of investigations,” Mr Nansio said.

Our efforts to speak to Mr Kabogo were fruitless on Sunday.

Police declined to disclose details of statements recorded at the station.
