KUPPET gets new officials

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 25 - The outspoken Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Njeru Kanyamba on Saturday lost his seat to Akelo Misori in the union's election.

Mr Misori who was the immediate former chairman of KUPPET garnered 197 votes against Kayamba's 143 in the tightly contested election held at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.

Presiding officer Mr Goffrey Omondi after announcing the winners for the various positions, lauded the teachers for having conducted an open and peaceful election.

Mr Akelo, in his acceptance speech promised to work with his newly elected team for the betterment of the welfare of teachers. He also promised to end wrangles in the union to make the union speak in one voice.

"We shall engage our employer (Teachers Service Commission) adequately in pursuit of service to the teachers who have elected us," he promised.

Mr Akelo asserted that t he was ready to move the union a step forward especially at a time when the country was also engaged in major reforms.

"I am not just taking the reins of power but the responsibility of unlocking the unions universally recognised potential," he said.

He said he would give monthly briefings to the union's branches as part of his reform agenda in the union.

Chairman elect Jeremiah Omboko praised the delegates for having made the right choice in electing the new set of officials to oversee the activities of the union.

"The delegates have made the right decision in this election... I will endeavour to fulfil my campaign promises of service to the teacher," he said.

He insisted that the team was ready for work and that the performance should be scrutinised and evaluated after their five year term.

"We are in a new age of KUPPET; we want a robust union that speaks with one voice through the secretary general and devoid of internal wrangles", he added.

Saturday's election also saw Jeremiah Omboko elected as the new as the chairman, Julius Korir as the new vice chairman and Moses Nturima as the new deputy secretary general.

Mr Mwethi Njenga was elected as the union's treasurer with Ronald Kipkori Tonui as his assistant.

Ms Catherine Nanjala was also elected as the union's gender secretary.

Nearly 400 delegates from KUPPET's branches took part in the voting.
