According to the latest opinion poll findings released Saturday by research firm Infotrak Harris on Kenyan's take on the judicial nominations, over 70 percent of those polled endorsed the candidature of the three candidates. According to the poll results 76 percent of those polled support Dr. Willy Mutunga for the post of Chief Justice, 79 percent are in support of Nancy Baraza for deputy Chief Justice and Keriako Tobiko received 78 percent support to retain his post as Director of Public Prosecutions. The poll conducted between 23rd and 27th may 2011 come at a time when parliament prepares to vet nominees before they are debated in parliament. Infotrak managing director Angela Ambitho said the polls were conducted intensively in all the provinces to understand Kenyans perception on the judicial nominees to the position of chief justice, deputy chief justice and director of public prosecutions. Debate on the nominees to the top judicial position has been held hostage by political intrigues and caution over their endorsement from a section of the clergy. CIOC to vet the three Saturday's poll results come barely two days after the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) was directed by House Speaker Kenneth Marende to take over the vetting of the three judicial nominees, following a stalemate in the legal affairs committee that rendered it unfit to carry out its key mandate. The formation of an Ad hoc committee intended for the special purpose of vetting Mutunga, Baraza and Tobiko also hit a snag with political parties differing on proposing of the members to the special team Chairman of the 27 member CIOC Abdikadir Mohammed is expected to finalize the vetting process and table the names next Wednesday. Marende said although some members of the committee are cabinet ministers, their appointment to the committee was on the basis of their legislative role. Members of the public have until the 7th June to submit their views on the nominees to the CIOC as public participation is key in legislative processes and this is conducted at the committee level. | ||
