A former aide to President Kibaki has denied claims that he was involved in soliciting for a bribe for Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko from former PS Sammy Kirui.
Mr Alfred Getonga, in a letter dated Wednesday and addressed to the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee which is vetting Mr Tobiko said that the allegations made by Mr Kirui for the MPs were false.
“The spurious mention of my name by Mr Sammy Kirui as the person who introduced the topic on the possibility of offering a bribe to Mr Keriako Tobiko is a false and cruel allegation. I would like to put it on record for your committee that I unequivocally deny these false and malicious claims,” Mr Getonga said in a statement sent to the Committee.
He added that Mr Kirui did not consult him before making these allegations and considering that they were made within the rules of parliamentary privilege, he was consulting his lawyers on the next course of action.
While appearing before the Committee, Mr Kirui said that he had not met Mr Tobiko personally but only interacted with the three proxies whom he said included Mr Getonga.
“Corruption works through intermediaries,” Mr Kirui told the MPs.
But in his rejoinder, Mr Getonga denied the allegations saying they were “false, malicious and cruel.” He added that he was curious as to why Mr Kirui would mention his name “when clearly as a lawyer he knows that it does not advance his argument by any measure.”
Mr Getonga said although he is known to Mr Kirui as a “genuine and dear “friend they never discussed Mr Tobiko.
“Therefore, our discussions were solely as friends and I do not recall ever talking about bribing anyone in the justice system and in particular Mr Tobiko,” Mr Getonga added.
He added that their discussion only touched on the gravity of the situation and the financial and emotional cost that would come about in trying to clear his name.
“As concerns Mr Tobiko, I would like to put on record that I know of him through his public profile but I have had no personal interaction with him. In particular, I have never acted as his broker in soliciting of any form of bribe on his behalf,” Mr Getonga told the Committee.
