Corridors of Power

E-mail Print PDF
Share/Save/Bookmark Did Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni ask Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta to back Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa for the Presidency? We are told by some of the people who accompanied the ODM Deputy Leader to Uganda and Tanzania told  Corridors that Ugandan  leader told Ruto that Wamalwa could be the best candidate but the Tanzanian Leader Jakaya Kikwete refused to endorse  any of the presidential hopefuls. Ruto's people have however denied the reports and accused Eugene's people of spinning the story in their favour of their man.

It seems Chief Justice Willy Mutunga’s appointment will herald a new beginning in the Judiciary. Mutunga has become the fisrt CJ in the history of the commonwealth to be sworn in without the official regalia. Highly placed source at State House intimated to Corridors of Power that the CJ declined to put on the attire saying it was colonial and had no place in the legal system. Pundits are asking whether Mutunga’s ‘defiance’ will inspire lawyers to change their style of dressing while attending court sessions.

Still in the judiciary, it seems Mutunga has a lot to do in eliminating corruption from the Corridors of Justice as court clerks are not willing to let off their corrupt ways. The clerks especially those who serve on the third floor of the Accounts Department have refused to stop their habit as they demand bribes before paying cash bails to suspects who have been acquitted.  A case in hand is No. 1996/09 of Albert who was acquitted and was supposed to follow up with his 100,000 cash bail. However even after following the procedure, the clerks deliberately misspelled his surname and asked him for something before rectifying the payment voucher. After insisting that he won’t pay them a bribe, the counter signed the voucher with the right names but again sought for ‘something’ before sending the money to his account. He still declined to pay a bribe and now the file has disappeared. The clerks are demanding 10,000 before they trace the file.

Differences between Bomachoge MP Simon Ogari and a former MP are getting nasty. Recently supporters of the politicians clashed during a prize giving ceremony at Nyakoiba secondary school. A bull worth Sh28, 000 donated to the school by the MP died in mysterious circumstances two days later. The MPs’ opponents also damaged a bridge leading to the school to prevent the MP from accessing the institution for the ceremony.
