null 1/1 NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 24 - Newly appointed Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga on Friday joined Twitter in an unprecedented move for a senior official of an otherwise conservative Judiciary. Dr Mutunga, 65, who was sworn into office on Monday following rigorous public vetting in the ongoing wave of reforms under the new Constitution, tweeted:  "Hi friends, I am very new to the world of Twitter but hopefully I will get the hang of it. Meanwhile, this is another avenue to reach me." By Friday evening, Dr Mutunga had more than 1,000 followers within hours of creating the user account http://twitter.com/#!/WMutunga By embracing social media, Dr Mutunga has opened a new front in the Kenyan Judiciary which has been widely seen as a closed institution comprising static personalities. Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Gichugu MP Martha Karua and business mogul Chris Kirubi are some of the influential personalities in East Africa who have joined Twitter, even as a wave of social media enthusiasts engulfs the cyberspace with content, ranging politics, social life, business and technology. Many Kenyan bloggers welcomed Dr Mutunga to the social network. "The CJ is on Twitter now the tweefs will be sorted amicably," said Jimmy Sickolia. In one of his replies, Dr Mutunga said: "Thank you all for the welcome. I am overwhelmed by how strong this forum is - over 30 friends in 3 minutes!" When Dr Mutunga formally took over office he pledged to transform the Judiciary by upholding high standards and respecting the new Constitution. He told journalists he would ensure "an end to impunity at the courts as part of the much awaited reforms." Addressing journalists at the high court buildings soon after being sworn in at State House, Dr Mutunga announced that he had instructed all judicial officials to discharge their duties diligently and ensure that courts remained reachable to Kenyans at all times.
