NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 26 - Police have arrested two people who are behind a scheme where the identity of Chief of General Staff Jeremiah Kianga was forged and used to register a mobile phone money transfer account to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans.
The man and his sister were arrested in Kiambu on Saturday and have since confessed that they had been assisting their other brother who is serving a life sentence at the Kamiti Maximum prison withdraw money sent to the phone account number.
“They are cooperating well with us and the investigations are now complete. We have concluded that the two have a case to answer,” a detective involved in the probe said but he did not reveal the identities of the suspects.
“They are related. We are talking about a brother and a sister here and the one in prison is their brother,” he added.
Transactions of half a million shillings or more were made in the last quarter of last year when the convict duped people that he was the CGS and would secure them a chance during a military recruitment drive.
“The fellow in Kamiti registered a sim card under the name of the CGS and started contacting people, it is interesting how people fall into such traps. When someone sends money to him, the name of the CGS appears and this serves to confirm to the sender that he is dealing with the man in charge of the military unaware that they have fallen prey to a dangerous criminal,” he added.
He said although they have been unable to recover any money from the suspects or the convict in Kamiti, they are determined to ensure justice is done by arraigning the suspects in court.
Most of them only realised that they had sent money to a conman when they made enquiries at the Department of Defense where they were advised to write a formal complaint with the police who have been pursuing the matter until yesterday when the two were arrested.
Police at the CID headquarters and Kilimani division who were pursuing the matter have told Capital News that the two will be arraigned at the Kiambu Law courts tomorrow to face relevant charges. He said no action will be taken againsgt the convict at Kamiti because he is condemned.
Former Military Spokesman Bogita Ongeri once told Capital News that Kianga was determined to have the matter probed to its logical conclusion.
“It has come to our attention that people have gone as far as using the name of the CGS to register phone accounts to receive money. The CGS is aware of this matter which under investigation by the police,” Ongeri said in a past interview with Capital News.
