NAIROBI, Kenya, March 18 - Medical Services Minister Anyang' Nyong'o has proposed that all health facilities run by the City Council of Nairobi be surrendered to the Ministry of Medical Services for efficient management.

Professor Nyong'o noted that these facilities continued to be underutilised while others lie idle, yet they could assist in providing quality health care if well run.

"Under the new Constitution of course other proposals can be made but we should look carefully to ensure that these facilities are used to ease the pressure that comes on Mbagathi and Kenyatta National Hospital so that some of the primary health care services are rendered at these facilities," the Minister said.

He added that in Nairobi alone, there was a need for three more district hospitals to fully cater for the needs of the millions of city residents.

"We are soon opening a new district hospital in Embakasi but I would also like to appeal to Kenyans not to turn our hospitals into hotels and hostels," he stated.

"Let us make inpatient stay in our hospitals as short as possible because the world over treatment is going more and more towards outpatient treatment," Professor Nyong'o noted.

The Minister also said that the government was undertaking major construction and rehabilitation of 80 hospitals throughout the country.

"A hospital management service fund has been set up to improve hospital management, planning and budgeting and we are also improving specialised services such as dialysis in our referral hospitals in Coast and Nakuru Provincial General Hospitals," he stated.

He was speaking at the Mbagathi District Hospital where he opened a Sh25.6 million modern kitchen complex constructed with the assistance of the National Bank.
