ODM-K set to wipe out name in new start

The ODM-K is set to change its party name and logo this week. In what may be interpreted as a move to dissolve the party in order to comply with requirements under the new constitution, the party bigwigs meet tomorrow in Nairobi.

The ODM-K deputy national treasurer Shakilla Abdalla said the exercise, which will cost the party millions of shillings, will ensure that the party does not lose votes to ODM because the names are almost similar.

She said the change will be in line with the Political Parties Act adding that the party is planing a series of workshops for its members countrywide to sensitise them on the changes.

Shakilla, who is also a nominated MP, was speaking to reporters as the party received ODM defectors, who included activist Sureya Hersi, former Kenya Ports Authority MD Abdallah Mwaruwa and a former contestant for Bahari seat. Abdalla said voters have been confusing between ODM and ODM adding that this has cost her party many votes.

The MP at the same time said ODM-K is ready to seek alliance with any other party that shares its vision. She said the party will open offices in all parts of the country.

The meeting was also attended by politicians Farida Tolli, Phillip Ndolo and lawyer Justus Munyithya. Hersi accused ODM of not taking into account gender equality in its leadership. “I am motivated by the fact that Abdallah comes from the interior parts of the country but ODM-K has trusted her and given her a voice that rarely happens in other parties” Hersi said.

The activist said she will vie for a seat in Mombasa County and urged women to fight for leadership positions saying nothing comes on a silver platter.

At the same time, the leaders asked Transport Minister Amos Kimunya to give the government’s stand over the port privatisation saying the issue is causing unnecessary tension. “This situation is getting out of hand and can become another Goldenberg if we keep quiet. The matters should not be left in the hands of a few,” Abdallah said.
