A standoff has ensued over a meeting to launch a new alliance between Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa and former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga after police made a last-minute cancellation.
The meeting, scheduled for this morning at the Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi, was cancelled last evening through a phone call from Nairobi police boss Anthony Kibuchi to Mr Wamalwa.
“I was surprised to get a call this evening from the PPO informing me that he was at State House and that a decision had been made to cancel our meeting,” Mr Wamalwa told the Nation on phone.
He added that the PPO informed him the decision was reached due to security concerns.
“I told him this is unacceptable and they were still operating like they are under the old constitutional dispensation. We are going on with our meeting and will be at Kamukunji grounds from 10am as planned,” said Mr Wamalwa.
Mr Njenga and Mr Wamalwa seek to drive a generational change agenda by forming an alliance in readiness for 2012 elections.
The name, leadership line-up and agenda of the alliance is to be revealed on Monday if police allow the meeting to go on as planned.
The meeting was to take place yesterday but was pushed by Mr Kibuchi to Monday after he met with Mr Wamalwa.
According to Mr Wamalwa, the date was picked because it is the first Jamhuri Day under the new Constitution.
