Ruto throws Ocampo gauntlet

Eldoret North MP William Ruto claimed on Wednesday that the International Criminal Court (ICC) will lose the case against him.

Mr Ruto said ICC had not carried out independent investigations as per the Rome Statute and wondered how the court wanted to press charges against the Hague six.
“The Rome Statute demands that you carry out independent investigations before you charge somebody which is not the case here,” he said.
Speaking at his Sugoi home after hosting women leaders, Mr Ruto warned his political rivals it was too early to celebrate.
“They think that I have a burden which will knock me out of the 2012 presidential race but they will be shocked soon because I know I am clean,” the MP for Eldoret North said.
Mr Ruto said he was opposed to a local tribunal because it could have been manipulated to punish the suspects for crimes they did not commit. He welcomed MPs’ move to pull Kenya out of the Rome Statute.
“If there is no justice in a Statute, why should you subscribe to it?” he said. He asked how he could distribute 3,000 guns at his home while Kenya has a very elaborate security network.
“If I distributed such a number of guns, where was the intelligence and other security organs?”
Mr Ruto said Rift Valley leaders would meet soon to map out new strategies for the province following the ICC condemnation.
“We will meet soon and iron out our differences before we move forward,” he said.
Others named by ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo over the post election violence are deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura, Industrialisation minister Henry Kosgey, Post Master-General Hussein Mohamed Ali and Kass FM radio presenter Joshua Sang.
