In Summary
- Police estimate about 7,000 people attended burial of polygamist who died 62 days ago
One of the world’s most prolific polygamists has finally been laid to rest, two months after he breathed his last.
And the products of Akuku Danger’s charm and hard labour were there for all to see during his final farewell in the scorching sun over the weekend.
Akuku Danger married more than 100 wives, divorced more than 30, had 210 known children, died at 94 years and it took 62 days to organize for his burial, the culmination of which saw more than 40 bulls and 30 goats being slaughtered to feed the mourners, who police estimated to be around 7,000.
Of this, about 1,100 were his grandchildren.
Christians and traditionalists joined hands to give Akuku, whose fame as a ladies’ man, spread beyond borders, a fitting send off.
The children wore T-shirts; the grandchildren had tags; while wives were in white full dresses and scarves that made the whole clan stand out from the multitude at the funeral.
At one point there was near confusion when Akuku’s body could not fit in the coffin that had been initially bought, forcing the family to get another one. And even this one could not be carried with the handles for fear that it may fall apart.
Instead, it was placed on pieces of wood which the pall bearers used to lift Akuku to his final resting place.
His sister, Roselina Atieno Lego, said always got what he wanted.
“My parents were against his love for women. They objected when he wanted to marry a second wife but due to his persistence and determination, they let him marry his wives,” said Roselina.
