Parties prepare for Kirinyaga by-election

Political parties are gearing up to nominate candidates for the February 16 by-election in Kirinyaga Central constituency.

Preparations are also ongoing for nine civic wards in other parts of the country.
Candidates wishing to run on the Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket have until Wednesday next week to submit their applications.
Those seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominations have to do so by next Thursday.
According to the Interim Independent Electoral Commission, political parties wishing to take part in the by-election have until December 14 to finalise the nominations of their respective candidates.
The candidates will present nomination papers before returning officers on January 20 and 21 next year.
PNU secretary general Kiraitu Murungi, in a press advertisement on Sunday, asked those interested to present their documents to the party’s executive director by December 8.
Pay nomination fees
The party’s parliamentary candidates are required to pay Sh50,000 while civic candidates will part with Sh5,000.
In a similar advertisement ODM asked potential candidates to contact the secretariat as processing of nominations was in place.
The party’s parliamentary aspirants are required to pay Sh100,000 while youth, women and disabled candidates will pay Sh75,000.
Civic candidates will pay Sh10,000 while youth, women and the disabled seeking the same ticket will pay Sh7,500.
“The National Election Board assures ODM members nominations will be free and fair, reflecting the will of party members,” the board’s secretary, Dr Joseph Misoi, said.
