A Catholic bishop has urged President Kibaki not to sign any law that would delink Kenya from the International Criminal Court or alienate the country from international community.
Mombasa Archbishop Boniface Lele appealed to the President to consider the possible repercussions that would befall the country if ostracised by the international community.
“Were it not for the intervention of our international brothers and sisters during the post-election violence, Kenya would have turned into smoke and ashes,” said Bishop Lele while celebrating a Christmas mass at Holy Ghost Cathedral.
The Bishop criticised Parliament of using its powers to pull out the country of its obligations to the Rome Statutes and go against the wishes of the majority of Kenyans.
“We feel cheated by Parliament over the motion of pulling Kenya out of its international obligations just to protect some of their colleagues mentioned as suspects of the post-elections violence,” he said.
He noted that justice would not be done if those mentioned were not dealt with according to the law.
Meanwhile, the government has been urged to immediately implement sections of the new Constitution which did not require Parliament interpretation.
Kenya National Commission on Human Rights commissioner Hassan Omar Hassan said Kenyans should enjoy 'quick gains’ of the Constitution through the adoption of Bill of Rights.
“We expect to have a new chief justice, new attorney general and new deputy public prosecutor to ensure accountability and transparency within our judicial system,” he said.
The commissioner called on Parliament to harmonise legislators’ salaries to conform to the realities of Kenya ’s economy before 2012.
