KIBAKI FOR WORLD CUP

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 9 - President Mwai Kibaki will on Thursday June 10, Chair a special cabinet meeting ahead of this year’s Budget.

At the meeting the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Uhuru Kenyatta will brief the President and members of the cabinet on some of the highlights of the budget speech that will be presented in the afternoon.

During his Madaraka Day Speech, President Kibaki pointed out that job creation for the country’s youth was a top priority for the grand coalition government. He also outlined measures that the government will be taking to stimulate economic growth and help in wealth and job creation while ensuring equitable distribution of resources.

President Kibaki has also assured the Kenyan public that enough resources will be allocated to ensure successful completion of the constitution review process.

The measures highlighted by the President are expected to be factored in the Budget speech.

Later on Thursday, President Kibaki will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa where he will attend the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup.

"The hosting of the World Cup for the first time in Africa is a historic moment. The government and people of Kenya wish to congratulate the government and people of South Africa for hosting this event that brings the global community together every four years. We share in your joy and wish you every success as you bring the world to Africa," said President Kibaki in his message to the people of South Africa.

President Kibaki also wished the people of Kenya an enjoyable and peaceful viewing of the 2010 world cup.

"Over this period when many of you will be following the events in South Africa, let us also as a nation reflect on what steps we must take to move Kenyan football to the global stage."

"We have the talent and we must harness it by investing more in football at the grassroots and encouraging our youth to see this as a lucrative sport. We must also streamline the administration and management of the sport through holistic and futuristic policies and actions . This is the only way to ensure that we excel in future tournaments so that Kenya can take its rightful place as a truly powerful sporting nation," Said President Kibaki in his message to local football fans.

President Kibaki is expected back in the country on Saturday June 12.
