FUEL GUZZLERS ON SALE

People willing to buy vehicles formerly used by top government officials will on Wednesday converge on godowns in Nairobi’s Industrial Area to place their bids.

Those wishing to take part in the auction will pay a Sh30,000 deposit by banker’s cheque to the Finance ministry.

The top-of-the-range “fuel guzzlers” include Mercedes Benzes, Volvos as well as Toyota Land Cruisers.

Head of the taskforce that coordinated the return of the 99 vehicles, Mr Donald Kibera, said the good state of the vehicles was expected to attract a lot of bidders.

Throw-away prices

“They are all good vehicles and fairly new, so we expect a good crowd,” he said.

Government and independent valuers have already assessed the value of the vehicles, Mr Kibera said.

Each vehicle has a reserve price, usually set by the assessor.

The auction has been set for 11am, according to an advertisement by the Finance ministry on Friday, May 8.

The taskforce had earlier invited the media to view the vehicles in the go-downs after reports surfaced that some had been sold at throw-away prices.

The disposal comes a day before the reading of the annual Budget, a year after Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta announced measures to slash the government’s fuel bill by withdrawing the vehicles in exchange for Volkswagen Passats.
