THE 3 ARRESTS

Police have arrested three suspects over blasts that killed six and wounded dozens during Sunday's No rally at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.

A police official was quoted by the French news agency AFP saying the three were arrested on Wednesday.

"Three suspects have been arrested and are being interrogated over the blast that occured on Sunday. They are being questioned to establish if they were involved," a senior police official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"They were tracked via a text message one had sent to another, that is how he led officers to where the two others were. They are now in custody and we are trying to establish if they are culpable," he added.

The blasts ripped through a large gathering convened by religious leaders for a 'mega prayer meeting' which however turned into a campaign rally against the proposed constitution.

131 other people were injured, 112 treated and discharged while 21 are still admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and another one at Nairobi Hospital.

A memorial service for the blast victims is being held Thursday at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi after the City Council declined to issue a permit to church leaders to hold the service at the venue of the attack.

On Wednesday the minister for internal security George Saitoti told parliament that police were yet to establish whether the attack was locally or foreign instigated.
