A Senator and a Member of the National Assembly allied to the Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) have called for the disbanding of Jubilee affiliate parties to form one formidable party.
Meru senator Kiraitu Murungi and Chuka-Igamba Ng’ombe legislator Muthomi Njuki said political parties in the Mt Kenya region are hurriedly crafted before elections and do not last long after the polls.
Speaking in Chuka Town, the two said APK would be disbanded for the sake of unity and the strengthening of a political outfit from the region strong enough to face the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
“We have a problem since we rush at the eleventh hour to form a party for the sake of elections.
In 2002, we had Narc which was replaced by PNU in 2007.
In 2013, we formed the Jubilee alliance. All this time, ODM has only grown stronger,” said Mr Njuki.
“We have proposed to sell the bus (APK) to matatu people or dismantle it and sell it as scrap metal," quipped the legislator.
"Let us have one strong party so as to be ready for the 2017 elections,” he added.
Mr Murungi supported the call and said affiliate parties should be dissolved so that everyone can be treated equally in the Jubilee alliance.
“We are seeking to strengthen parties within the coalition and disband the affiliates so we have one strong party. This has been the major problem in this region," Mr Murungi said.
"Political parties survive for only one election period whereas ODM and others survive longer and have better time to organise their politics. I think it is a good call to disband affiliate parties,” he said.
Mr Murungi said APK would happily merge with other parties so that they can strengthen politics in the region.
APK has two elected senators, Meru's Kiraitu Murungi and Embu’s Lenny Kivuti, as well as three Members of the National Assembly.
Meru governor Peter Munya was also elected on an APK ticket.
