Bomet reps to pull out of House committees

Wednesday, August 28, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY GIDEON KETER
Bomet county assembly members have hatched a scheme to pull out from all the house committees to frustrate house business and tame Governor Isaac Rutto.
The MCAs are targeting to cause a quorum hitch in all the crucial committees thus frustrating the bills to be debated in the house. All the five MPs from the county and 15 out of the 35 county representatives attended a meeting yesterday at URP headquarters on Ngong Road in Nairobi.
The county legislators resolved that the leader of majority and chief whip, who were said to have been removed, will remain in office. It is not, however, clear how there scheme will work out considering that the MCAs who turned up for yesterday meetingwere less than half.
The county reps alleged that Rutto had kicked outchairmen of crucial committees who are perceived to be allied to Deputy President William Ruto.
“We are aware that as we are here now, the governor is presiding over the reconstitution of house committees," said Kapletundo ward representative Bernard Ng'eno.
On Monday, the office of the Deputy President denied reports that Ruto had summoned all the Bomet county MPs and members of the county assembly for a meeting in Nairobi yesterday to discuss ways of taming Rutto.
Head of Ruto’s communication department David Mugonyi said the Deputy President was scheduled to attend a meeting in Mombasa. “The boss is in Mombasa and has just learnt of the meeting in the media but he did not call for any meeting to discuss individuals. He is not aware of any URP meeting neither is he involved in party activities,” Mugonyi said.
It was clear however that not all the MCAs responded to an SMS invitation sent from URP headquarters. All the nominated county reps, who have allegedly been threatened with having their nomination revoked if they do not help tame Rutto, kept off the meeting. URP secretary Fred Muteti, however, denied that the partyhas threatened to cancel the nomination of the 10 county reps.
