Form 3 truants made to face the music, literally

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY JUSTUS OCHIENG
DRAMA unfolded at Nyagondo Secondary School in Siaya County after the school Principal hired a local musician to entertain errant students in the habit of sneaking out of school to go to entertainment joints.
The three students habitually visit a nearby Wagai Resort in Gem constituency to have fun at night. On Monday,Robert Musolo, the principal invited a local musician ‘Nya John’ to entertain the three form three students from morning to evening as a form of punishment.
Parents who spoke to The Star said the students were made to dance to the music as teachers and other students watched. Yesterday, Nyanza County Parents Association chairman Jackson Omollo said that hiring a musician is not an effective way of instilling discipline in the students.
The principal Robert Musolo however refused to comment on the matter. “I cannot give you any information concerning how we carry out our punishments here,” he said.
His deputy Mildred Oketch said only the principal is allowed to speak to the media. Siaya county director of education Nereah Olik said she was not aware of the hiring of the musician but said she will investigate the matter. “The issue has not reached my desk but I will investigate it," Olik said.
